As an educator, my main goal is to show all of my students that they can be successful as they study math. Majoring in math was one of the hardest things I have ever done...I took classes where we did not even use numbers anymore! I understand (and hate) the feeling of sitting in a math class confused, overwhelmed, and defeated. I know that middle school is when math become some students' worst enemy. Sometimes, it feels like this: ------------------>
Therefore, I strive to make my classroom a place where all of my students feel confident in their math skills and comfortable in the learning process. I am an advocate of discovery-based, cooperative learning where students engage in their learning through discussion, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. Everyone can learn math - there is no such thing as a "math person" and a "non-math person." Watch Jo Boaler elaborate on these ideas here. If you and your student want to enroll in an online Stanford class entitled, "How to Learn Math," you can find it here!
